Applying for Financial Aid

Step One: Apply for Aid

Getting started with financial aid begins with completing the right application and understanding your eligibility.

Whether you're a first-time applicant, a returning student, or new to Washington, this page will walk you through the key steps. All students should complete either the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or WASFA (Washington Application for State Financial Aid). These applications determine your eligibility for federal, state, and institutional aid.

  • FAFSA is for U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens.
  • WASFA is for students who are undocumented or ineligible to file the FAFSA due to immigration status.

Not sure which application is right for you? Use this eligibility tool to find out.

When and How to Apply for Financial Aid

Financial aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Submit your application early to maximize your funding.

  • Priority Deadline: February 1 for the following academic year
  • FAFSA/WASFA Opens: Typically October 1 (check for updates)

If you miss the priority deadline, you can still apply, but aid may be limited.

What You'll Need to Complete the FAFSA or WASFA

  • Your Social Security Number or Alien Registration Number (FAFSA only)
  • Federal tax information or tax returns (typically from two years prior)
  • Records of untaxed income
  • Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)
  • CWU's Federal School Code: 003771

Returning Students

You must reapply for financial aid each academic year by submitting a new FAFSA or WASFA. Your financial aid may change year to year based on your financial situation, academic progress, or available funding.

First-Time Applicants will receive an award letter through U.S. Mail and instructions on how to accept or decline aid online. Returning Students will be notified via CWU Outlook email when their award is available to view in MyCWU.

Special Circumstances

Life happens, and your financial situation may change after you've filed your application. CWU may be able to make adjustments to your financial aid. Contact the Financial Aid Office to request a Special Circumstances Review.

Helpful Reminders

  • Always use official websites to apply (never pay to submit a FAFSA or WASFA)
  • Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when possible to reduce errors
  • Keep copies of everything you submit
  • Check your CWU email regularly for updates and requests for documentation
