Heritage Spanish Program 

Español como lengua heredada

Major (50 credits) and Minor (30 credits) 

Our Heritage Spanish Program is designed to support Spanish-English bilingual students of all proficiencies in strengthening their bilingual skills for a wide range of contexts. The program caters to the linguistic and affective needs of English-Spanish bilinguals who grew up mostly in the U.S., hearing and speaking Spanish at home. If that’s you, join us in our program to learn about topics relevant to Spanish-English bilinguals while expanding your linguistic repertoire and competence in Spanish. We know your bilingualism is a super power!

In our program we care about your learning:

  • You will receive individual placement into an appropriate class;
  • You will be granted credits for classes below your proficiency level for a faster timeline to graduation;
  • You will work in small classes with other bilingual students and have a lot of individualized attention to help you succeed;
  • You will be able to take courses both in person and online;
  • You will use open-source, free, course materials;
  • You will have opportunities to engage in undergraduate research and community service learning;
  • You will learn in a safe and welcoming community in our department and our classrooms.

  • You will gain valuable skills to succeed in any career as a fully bilingual professional;

Certificate in Spanish Translation and Interpretation

Certificado de traducción e interpretación

Certificate of 20 credits, available to any student or community member

The Spanish Translation and Interpretation Certificate allows students to explore the foundations and theoretical underpinnings of translation and interpretation while honing their skills as translators in the real world through community service learning. The certificate is a comprehensive hands-on program that allows students to practice their skills, benefit their communities, while improving both their oral and written proficiency in Spanish. 

In our program you will be able to:

  • Complete your coursework in one year;
  • Learn translation through theory and practice;
  • Enhance your knowledge of Spanish for the professional world;
  • Prepare for WA State Translator Certification;
  • Acquire hands-on experience through community translation and interpretation projects, which include interpreting for parent-teacher conferences at local schools, and translating the student newspaper into Spanish among other opportunities!

For students interested in pursuing a degree, Spanish Translation and Interpretation is a Major specialization within Spanish BA.
