Deaf and Sign Language Studies Major

Jesus Chavez Lara at World Languages Day 2025

My name is Jesús Chavez Lara, and I am proud to be a Deaf student at Central Washington University, studying Deaf and Sign Language Studies. I grew up in Pasco, Washington, and I communicate in English, Spanish, and American Sign Language (ASL).

I chose Deaf and Sign Language Studies because I wanted to connect deeply with the Deaf community, learn more about my own culture, and help bridge the gap between Deaf and hearing worlds. Learning ASL changed my life. It gave me access to communication, culture, and community, and I want to give that same access to future generations.

At CWU, I have had the opportunity to take on leadership roles that shaped my college experience. I serve as President of the ASL Club and work as a staff member at the ASL Resource Center (ARC). Our officers have organized game nights, social events, and field trips that bring Deaf culture and ASL learning to life for students. I also help create social media content to promote ASL programs at CWU, making our community more visible and accessible.

The program has been rewarding because it allows me to apply what I learn in class directly to real experiences with students and the community. I’ve been able to grow as a leader, improve my communication skills, and encourage others to engage with ASL and Deaf culture.

After graduation, I plan to continue my education and become a teacher in Deaf education or an ASL teacher for high school students. My goal is to inspire and support Deaf students by giving them language access and representation, just as I received. I want to show them that they can succeed, lead, and thrive.

Being part of CWU’s Deaf and Sign Language Studies program has been both exciting and meaningful. It’s not just about academics, it’s about culture, leadership, and community. I am thankful for the support I’ve had here, and I am excited to carry what I’ve learned into the future.
