Scholastic Standards

Scholastic standards are established to identify and intervene with students who are having academic difficulty and/or are not making satisfactory academic progress, to encourage students to assume responsibility for their own formal education, and to ensure that the resources of the college are used in the best interest of all its current and potential students. Running Start students are expected to remain in good standing and maintain a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.

Good Standing

A student is in good standing when both the quarterly and cumulative grade point average (GPA) are 2.0 or higher for all credits earned at CWU.

Academic Probation

A student will be placed on academic probation when the GPA for the previous quarter is below 2.0.

Students placed on academic probation will be required to meet with the Running Start Advisor mid-quarter to discuss their progress.

Academic Suspension

A student who has been on academic probation will be placed on academic suspension if the GPA for the previous quarter is below 2.0.

Students placed on academic suspension will be notified oftheir status by the CWU Running Start Office. Students placed on academic suspension will be given the option to appeal their suspension from the program.

Students who do not appeal their suspension status will be withdrawn from all CWU classes.

The student’s high school counselor will be notified of the student’s status.

Academic Suspension Appeal

Students placed on academic suspension will be allowed to submit a petition presenting evidence of circumstances beyond the student’s control which adversely affected the student’s performance during the preceding quarters. The petition must also present a plan of success the student intends to implement if they are permitted to remain in the program. If the petition presents convincing evidence of extenuating circumstances and an effective plan for success, the student will be referred to the Running Start Academic Standing Committee. The committee will hear the student’s case and may decide to allow the student to enroll for one more quarter on academic probation. Students who do not appeal their suspension, or who are denied reinstatement into the program, will be dismissed from the program for three quarters not including summer.

Academic Success Resources

All students are encouraged to take advantage of academic success resources available to them as a CWU student.

The Academic Success Center provides tutoring in a variety of subjects, peer assisted learning, and academic coaching.

CWU Libraries provides print and digital resources for students to use in their classes. They also offer a number of course and subject guides to help students get started with their research. Librarians are also available to assist students with research and finding resources they need.
