CITI Training

The University's Federalwide Assurance (FWA) requires all principal investigators and co-investigators to complete training in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) before receiving approval for and conducting human subjects research. The HSRC also requires faculty sponsors overseeing student research to complete the RCR training.

If research is being funded by NSF or NIH, additional RCR training may be required (see CWUR 2-30-010). Contact Research and Sponsored Programs for more details.

Introduction

The HSRC uses the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) program for required training in human subjects research.  Recertification is required every 5 years.

CITI training for all research personnel and faculty sponsors must be completed before submitting your application through IRBManager.

CITI certification from investigators who completed human subjects training within the past 5 years at another institution may be accepted at the discretion of the HSRC administrator.  A copy of the certificate listing the completed modules must be emailed to hsrc@cwu.edu for consideration.

CITI training is recognized in IRBManager based on your CWU email address.  Non-CWU affiliated researchers who complete CITI training by accessing the link below must use the same email in CITI as provided to set up the account in IRBManager.

NOTE: If your CITI training is not recognized in IRBManager, there are two possible reasons:

  • You are attempting to submit an application through IRBManager on the same day that you completed CITI training;
  • You used a non-CWU email address when completing CITI training.  You must change the email address in CITI to match your CWU email address (firstname.lastname), or for Non-CWU affiliates, the one listed to set up your account in IRBManager.

CITI Program Training

1. Log in at the link below using your CWU credentials.

2. In the registration process, 'add a course' depending on the following:

If you are submitting an HSRC application for your research, choose Researchers/Investigators as the learner group for Question 1.  Select 'not at this time' for Questions 2 through 5.

If you are student taking a research methods class, choose 'not at this time' for Question 1 through 4.  For Question 5, select Responsible Conduct of Research This training is designed for students whose research will NOT be presented outside the classroom.

3. The amount of time to complete the training depends on your learner group.  You may complete the tutorial in more than one session.

4. You must achieve an average score of at least 80% on all quizzes to proceed through each module and successfully complete the training.  Depending on your learner group, there are required, electives and supplemental modules to complete.  All groups have required modules; researchers/investigators must choose 3 electives relevant to their research; supplemental modules are optional and available for all learner groups to expand their knowledge.
