GEOL 489 Geologic Field Methods
This is a capstone course for students in the Geology BS program. It takes place during spring quarter and the weeks immediately after the quarter ends.
This course emphasizes learning how to create, read, and interpret geologic maps in the context of:
- Reviewing and integrating the undergraduate geology curriculum.
- Applying material learned in a classroom or lab to its occurrence in a natural setting.
- Developing critical and creative spatially and temporally-based thinking skills (i.e. 3D and 4D) based on:
- independent discovery,
- applying knowledge of core subject areas,
- developing skills on the proper acquisition of data,
- learning the limitations in quantity and quality of data,
- developing sound interpretations based on uncertain, non-unique, and limited data, and limited time for analysis, and
- applying deductive reasoning using the scientific method.
- Emphasizing professional behavior including teamwork and collaboration in the field and in the camp, completing assignments on time, and participating in discussions.

- Spring quarter meetings take place on Wednesdays, 2-5 pm
- Spring quarter weekend field trips will take place 3 of the 4 following dates:
- April 6
- April 13
- April 20
- May 11
- June 17–July 6: In the field in Mitchell, OR
