Careers and Opportunities

A career in sports communications offers the opportunity to combine your passion for sports with your skills in communication, media, and storytelling within the dynamic sports industry.

  • Director of Athletic Communications: As a Director of Athletic Communications, you would oversee the strategic planning and execution of communications for an athletic department or sports organization.
  • Sports Journalist Social Media Manager: As a social media manager in the sports industry, you would develop and execute social media strategies and create engaging content, manage social media accounts, interact with followers, and monitor online conversations related to sports.
  • Branding Specialist/Manager: In this role, you would focus on developing and managing the brand image of sports organizations or athletes. Develop brand strategies, oversee brand consistency, and coordinate branding efforts across various platforms and marketing materials.
  • Sports Videographer: Good with a camera? As a Sports Videographer, you would capture sports events, record interviews, and shoot footage for highlights, documentaries, or promotional videos.


Highlights

Alumni Doing Bigger, Better Things

2020 graduate, Hayden Mangen, received an undergraduate degree in Sports Management. He now works for Fort Lewis College Athletics as the Athletic Communications Assistant

Former ESPN Indianapolis Colts’ NFL Nation reporter, Mike Wells graduated from CWU in 1999 with his degree in Communication. He is now working as a lecturer in the Media School at Indiana University Bloomsburg.

After graduating in 2000, Tim Booth earned his degree in Journalism and now works as a Sportswriter and Editor at The Associated Press. Booth is a CWU alum, serving as a member of the Central Washington University Alumni Association Board of Directors.

CWU’s Sports Management program is the home of the Northwest Center for Sports, which provides experiential opportunities and networking for students wanting to enter the sports management field. The center hosts conferences, guest speakers, and field trips designed to spotlight sports industry career opportunities.

Students in CWU’s Sports Management degree program have the choice of six specialization areas, including Sports Coaching, Sports Business, Sports Events, Sports Law, Sport Communication, and Recreation Management.
