Careers and Opportunities

From coaching techniques and athlete development to team management and ethical issues, our program ensures you graduate with a comprehensive understanding of the field.

  • Youth Coach: As a youth coach, you would work with young athletes in various sports, focusing on skill development, sportsmanship, and fostering a love for the game.
  • High School or College Coach: You would be responsible for training athletes, developing game strategies, organizing practices, and leading teams in competitions. Coaching positions can be available for a wide range of sports at different levels of competition.
  • Professional Sports Coach: Professional sports teams hire coaches to lead and guide their athletes. As a professional sports coach, you would work with elite athletes, develop game plans, provide tactical instructions, and manage team dynamics.
  • Positional Coach: Positional coaches focus on coaching athletes in specific positions within a team sport. These coaches provide specialized instruction, technique development, and strategic guidance tailored to specific positions.

Specializations Catered to Your Interests

Students in CWU’s Sports Management degree program have the choice of six specialization areas, including Sports Coaching, Sports Business, Sports Events, Sports Law, Sport Communication, and Recreation Management.

Sport Coaching Alumni

2020 graduate, Josiah Julagay, received a bachelor's degree in Sport Management and Coaching from CWU. Later that year, he entered the Sport and Athletic Administration master’s program at CWU, graduating in 2021. He is now the Assistant Coach for Chattanooga State Community College Baseball Team.

Colby Meske-Thompson graduated in 2022 and studied Sport Coaching and Administration. Starting as Assistant Coach, he is now the head coach for the Enumclaw Hornets Middle School Football Team.

New Facilities, New Possibilities

CWU’s Department of Sport and Movement Studies is housed in the new $60 million Health Sciences Building, which allows students to study in a state-of-the-art facility with innovative technology.
