What is Sonia Kovalevsky Day?
Sonia Kovalevsky Days are held by colleges and universities around the country to honor Sonia Kovalevsky, the first woman in the modern era to earn a doctorate in mathematics. To inspire the next generation of mathematicians, scientists, engineers, and innovators, Sonia Kovalevsky Days feature workshops, talks, and problem-solving activities, as well as opportunities to network and envision a future in mathematics and similar career paths.
CWU Sonia Kovalevsky Day 2026

The CWU Department of Mathematics and College of the Sciences is excited to host Sonia Kovalevsky Day 2026 on our campus! The event is designed for students in grades 9-12.
- Students: Participate in mathematical activities led by CWU's award-winning faculty, build community, and learn about careers built on a mathematical foundation.
- Teachers: Participate in professional developmnent seminars and earn clock hours provided by the Washington State Mathematics Council.
Registration
Spaces are limited at this year's Sonia Kovalevsky Day. Students and educators interested in registering will be asked to complete the Registration Form and pay through a separate vendor.
Fees
$15 each for students
Free for teachers

Registration closes on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
Purchase Order
To arrange for payment by purchase order, contact Dr. Black directly at chris.black@cwu.edu. Indicate your school district, number of student tickets needed, and number of teacher tickets needed.
Scholarships
A limited of scholarships for the event are available. Send scholarship inquiries to Dr. Black at chris.black@cwu.edu.
