CNC Router - Carvey

Carvey by Instructables is a desktop CNC milling machine. Using a subtractive process, Carvey can produce a wide range of designs in a variety of materials, including metal, plastic, and wood. The MEC currently houses a Carvey in our Create Lab, Samuelson 126, that is open to use by CWU students, staff, and faculty, as well as community members.

How do I create a design for the Carvey?

Carvable designs can be created using Easel, a web-based software from Inventables. It allows users to design or import files in a simple platform and is easy-to-use for makers of all skill levels. There are tutorials on the Inventables website, or you can email us at mec@cwu.edu and make an appointment for MEC Staff to give you a brief tutorial.

What does it cost to use the Carvey?

Nothing! Use of the Carvey is absolutely free.

Does the MEC provide materials for the Carvey?

No, at this time the MEC does not provide or sell materials for use with the Carvey. You will need to bring your own, but we reserve the right to refuse any material we deem to be inappropriate for our machine.

Are there any designs the MEC will not carve?

We will not carve any designs that are under copywrite or any weaponry. The MEC reserves the right to refuse any carving order.

Can I operate the Carvey?

Currently, operation of the Carvey is limited to MEC Staff who have been trained in its proper use and safety protocols. However, you are welcome to watch while we carve your design.

What are the Carvey's Tech Specs?

  • Work Area: 11.6" x 8" x 2.75"
  • Accuracy: 0.003"
  • 300W DC spindle with RPM 12,000
  • ER-11 precision collet, adaptable to various bit sizes
