Hazardous Material

A release of hazardous materials could involve chemical, biological, or radioactive materials.

If a Hazardous Material is Released

  1. Never attempt to cleanup or touch the hazardous material unless you are trained to do so.
  2. Alert people in the immediate area and evacuate the area.
  3. Confine the hazard by closing all doors and windows; and turning off all air conditioners and heaters.

Call 911 and be prepared to provide as much information about the hazardous material as possible:


    • Your name, location, and call back number.
    • Identity of the hazardous material (if known) and the amount released.
    • Location of the release (building, room number, etc.).
    • Known or suspected hazards associated with the release.
    • If personnel have been exposed to the hazardous material, give details on the extent of exposure and any injuries or symptoms the victim(s) may be experiencing.
  2. Remain at a safe location to meet responders when they arrive and warn others from entering the area.
  3. If anyone had contact with the hazardous material, they should be isolated and await treatment by emergency personnel.
  4. Do not re-enter the building until told to do so by emergency personnel.
