Student Internship Insurance
Information and Purchasing Options
Central Washington University students who are enrolled and engaged in a practicum, internship, clinical or field study are required to purchase medical malpractice/general liability or professional liability coverage prior to starting work at the agreed site. Students may request a waiver from this requirement by furnishing career services with a certificate of comparable coverage for their review and approval prior to starting work at the site.
Please only enroll in ONE of the below coverages which pertains to your internship:
Medical-Malpractice and Professional Liability Insurance for Clinical and Medical Placements
The Student Medical Malpractice and Professional Liability Insurance Programs insures the medical and professional liability of enrolled CWU students who furnish mental and physical health-related professional services required as part of an enrolled curriculum, practicum or internship in a clinical setting.
The student must be enrolled in a CWU course to be eligible for this coverage.
Examples include:
- Audiologist
- Dietitian
- Drug and Alcohol Counselor
- Exercise Science (e.g., Athletic Trainer)
- Language-Speech Pathologist
- Marriage and Family Counselors
- Mental Health Counselor
- Occupational Therapist
- Physical Therapist
- School Counselor
- Services in Physical Education
- Social Worker
Any academic department within these and similar fields should make the General Liability and Student Medical Malpractice Insurance available to their enrolled students for purchase. The limit of liability under the policy is $1,000,000 per occurrence with a $3,000,000 per school annual aggregate. Coverage is limited to the insurance policy terms, conditions and exclusions. The cost is $16.11 for coverage through the duration of the annual master policy period, beginning and ending on September 1st of each year. It is the student's responsibility to make sure their premium is paid, and their coverage is current.
If you are unable to pay online, you can download the form and bring your enrollment form and payment to the CWU Cashiers Office for processing.
Non Medical-Student Internship/Practicum/Student Teaching Professional Liability Insurance
The Student Intern/Practicum Professional Liability Insurance Program insures the professional liability of enrolled CWU students who furnish professional services required as part of an enrolled curriculum, practicum, student teaching experience or internship.
The student must be enrolled in a CWU course to be eligible for this coverage.
Examples include:
- Communication
- Construction Management
- Criminal Justice
- Exercise Science (e.g., Gym Management)
- Family Studies
- Food Service Management
- Graphic Arts
- Hospitality, Recreation, and Tourism
- Journalism
- Law & Justice
- Network Administration
- Public Relations
- Safety and Health
- Teacher Practicum
- Wine Education
Any academic department within these and similar fields should make the Professional Student Intern Liability Insurance available to their enrolled students for purchase. The limit of liability under the policy is $1,000,000 per occurrence with a $3,000,000 per school annual aggregate. Coverage is limited to the insurance policy terms, conditions and exclusions. The cost is $6.22 for coverage through the duration of the annual master policy period, beginning and ending on September 1st of each year. It is the student's responsibility to make sure their premium is paid, and their coverage is current.

NOTE: This is not medical coverage for the student. Most businesses and organizations providing internship opportunities to CWU students have specific requirements that must be met by the student prior to performing services at their sites, such as proof of medical insurance, proof of immunizations, proof of medical malpractice liability or professional liability coverage and specific trainings. Please check with Career Services to determine if CWU has an agreement with the site that details the specific placement requirement.
