Zentner to Speak at Geohazards Symposium Public Day February 17

Landslides, Earthquakes, and Floods, Oh My!!! is the title of the Geohazards Symposium held in the Marion Oliver McCaw Hall at the Seattle Center beginning February 16. Scientists from the Pacific Northwest will speak about the geologic hazards on your doorstep, and how to be better prepared in case of a disaster.

The Public Day on Saturday, February 17, is a day for the general public and anyone interested in learning about the geologic hazards of their neighborhood and how they can protect their family and property. The Public Day will feature identical morning and afternoon sessions. Public Day is free, although registering for the event is necessary. Seattle Times science reporter Sandi Doughton is the keynote speaker for the event. Doughton, who literally wrote the book on Pacific Northwest earthquakes, Full-Rip 9.0: The Next Big Earthquake in the Pacific Northwest, will present "Shake, Rattle, and Rebound."

Nick Zentner, Central Washington University professor and host of PBS's popular Nick on the Rocks, will present "Assembling Washington Geologically," which addresses the whys and wherefores of the state's peculiar and volatile geology.

In addition to presentations, there will be informational booths, computer mapping stations and technical professionals available to discuss specific geologic hazards in local areas and how to reduce risks to people and property.

A rock identification booth will be staffed with geology students to help attendees identify their favorite specimens.
