Beginning this week, CWU's Sarah Spurgeon Gallery will be hosting OM·NI·DI·REC·TION·AL, a solo exhibition by Spokane-based sculptor Cozette Phillips.
Cozette Phillips, Sound Is Sight, 2022, Antimony, bismuth, copper, nickel, tin, and zinc with carbon transfer and steel hook, 20 in. x 28 in. x 6 in.
Phillips will give an opening address Thursday, February 16, from 4-5 p.m. in Randall Hall, room 117. The talk will be followed by a reception in the gallery (room 141) from 5-7 p.m.
From the perspective of modern ecological consciousness, Phillips-a fine arts instructor and gallery program director at Spokane Falls Community College-explores the tension between nature, industrialization, and residual loss. Her investigation moves in many different directions, drawing upon observations of the world around us, from climate change to deforestation and loss of habitat. Metal alloys, plastic, and concrete are used to reflect the influence that industry and development have upon nature.
By reimagining natural forms through industrial casting and fabrication, the artist offers visitors the opportunity to contemplate our past actions while leaving space to challenge our present course. Phillips posits that nothing in nature is static or fixed, leaving room for hope and an opportunity for change.
Phillips holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Metals from the State University of New York at New Paltz, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture and Illustration from the Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio.
OM·NI·DI·REC·TION·AL will remain on view through March 11. Sarah Spurgeon Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and Saturdays from 1-5 p.m. The gallery is closed on Sundays and will be closed Monday, February 20, for Presidents Day.
