Samuelson Construction Project Begins

Over the next several days, Lydig Construction will begin work on Samuelson Union Building. The state-funded project will restore and modernize the pre-Depression-era Samuelson Union Building into an integrated computer science technology center.

The first step in the project is to erect a fence around the building, as work inside the building begins. Later this summer the southern portion of Samuelson will be demolished, and, eventually replaced. The northern portion will be renovated. The project will preserve as many historic components of the building as possible.

The revamped and expanded facility will house academic programs offered by the departments of Computer Science, Mathematics, and Information Technology and Administrative Management (ITAM). Samuelson also will be home to the office of Multimodal Learning. The project is scheduled to be complete fall 2018.

Minor and major construction projects create revenue for city and county governments in Kittitas County. The $41 million Samuelson STEM project is expected to generate about $800,000 in sales tax and $332,000 in building permit fees just for the city of Ellensburg.
