Professor Yukari Amos Named to Washington Paraeducator Board

The Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC) has appointed Yukari Amos, a professor in Central Washington University’s Department of Education, Development, Teaching, and Learning, as the four-year institution of higher education representative on the Paraeducator Board. Dr. Amos’s research on the paraeducator career pathway makes her particularly well suited to serve on the board. Her four-year term will begin on July 17, 2019.

According to a statement from the board, Amos brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in education policy. Her background includes being a former social studies and ESL teacher in Federal Way and Tumwater. She received her Ph.D. in multicultural education from the University of Washington.

Earlier this year, Amos also was named a CWU Distinguished Professor. As an internationally-recognized, prolific, and engaged scholar, she was honored for her research accomplishment. Last year alone, she authored a book and co-edited two others. During her 13 years at CWU, she has been the sole author or lead co-author of 12 articles, 13 book chapters, and six other works.

The breadth of Amos’ research covers contributions to scholarly literature as well as impacts to the discipline, profession, and K-12 schools. This work has concentrated in three key areas: the journey of LatinX teachers and teacher candidates; diversity in children’s literature; and understanding of comparative education, especially in Japan and the United States.

When asked what she is most looking forward to as a board member, Amos said, “being able to contribute my knowledge and experiences with paraprofessionals, and improving their career advancement.”
