Portland Baroque Orchestra to Perform at CWU on April 8

The Portland Baroque Orchestra (PBO) will perform the 17th century German masterpiece, “The Vocal Concerto,” at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 8, in the Central Washington University Jerilyn S. McIntyre Music Building Concert Hall.

Unlike many of today’s orchestras, which use contemporary instruments, PBO’s instruments are of the Baroque period, such as viola da gambas, lutes, and organs.

“This means that the players have either instruments that were made in that period or are replicas made in modern times,” said Mark Goodenberger, CWU percussion studies director, who has played with PBO since the late 1980s. “In the program, there will be information about each player and their instrument’s maker and history, which I think is really cool and connects the audience more to the performance.“

It also allows the audience to hear the music as it was originally performed.

“PBO is dedicated to playing the music as authentically as possible by using instruments and performing practices that were common in the era when the music was composed,” added Goodenberger.

During the CWU performance, bass vocalist Harry van der Kamp will join PBO to perform a rarely heard cantata.
