Portland Baroque Orchestra to Perform at CWU on April 8
- March 28, 2014

The Portland Baroque Orchestra (PBO) will perform the 17th century German masterpiece, âThe Vocal Concerto,â at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 8, in the Central Washington University Jerilyn S. McIntyre Music Building Concert Hall.
Unlike many of todayâs orchestras, which use contemporary instruments, PBOâs instruments are of the Baroque period, such as viola da gambas, lutes, and organs.
âThis means that the players have either instruments that were made in that period or are replicas made in modern times,â said Mark Goodenberger, CWU percussion studies director, who has played with PBO since the late 1980s. âIn the program, there will be information about each player and their instrumentâs maker and history, which I think is really cool and connects the audience more to the performance.â
It also allows the audience to hear the music as it was originally performed.
âPBO is dedicated to playing the music as authentically as possible by using instruments and performing practices that were common in the era when the music was composed,â added Goodenberger.
During the CWU performance, bass vocalist Harry van der Kamp will join PBO to perform a rarely heard cantata.
Tickets, available at www.cwu.edu/tickets, are $10 for general admission and $5 for seniors and students. The performance is free for CWU students with ID. For more information, call 509-963-1216.
