Musician Carlos Núñez Performance in Seattle to Benefit CWU’s Game On! Program
- March 31, 2017
World renowned musician Carlos Núñez will donate the proceeds from his Seattle concert on April 5 to GAME ON!, a youth soccer and computer coding program co-sponsored by Central Washington University, the Microsoft Corporation, and the Real Madrid Foundation.
“We’re incredibly honored that Carlos Núñez has agreed to provide proceeds from his concert to the GAME ON! program,” said CWU President James L. Gaudino. “This unique program, which combines computer code training with soccer training to teach about core values, has already benefited dozens of young people in our state.”
Nunez, often called the troubadour of Galicia, is touring the U.S. to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his breakthrough debut album, “A Irmandade das Estrelas (Brotherhood of Stars),” which featured the Chieftains, Ry Cooder, and others. His Seattle performance will be held at 7:30 p.m., April 5, at Town Hall Seattle.
A two-time Grammy nominee, Núñez is the world’s most famous player of the gaita, the Galician bagpipes. In addition to the gaita, Núñez plays an amazing array of instruments including ocarina, assorted whistles, Scottish highland pipes, uilleann (Irish) pipes, bombarde (a kind of Breton oboe), biniou koz (Breton bagpipes), and pastoral pipes (18th-century precursor of the uilleann pipes).
The concert is sponsored by the honorary consul for Spain in Washington and Oregon, Luis Fernando Esteban, along with Central Washington University, Dragados USA, Torrez America, and K&L Gates.
Central Washington University is a leader in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education in the state of Washington. New state-of-the-art STEM facilities, such as the new Science II building and Samuelson STEM Center (under construction), put world class education and research within the reach of students from all walks of life.
