Kairos Quartet Performs Dvořák’s “American Quartet,” Mozart on November 17

CWU’s Kairos Quartet will perform Antonin Dvořák’s “American Quartet,” one of the most popular works in the chamber music repertoire. The concert, which also includes several delightful Mozart quartets, begins at 7:00 p.m., November 17, in the McIntyre Music Building Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

Composed shortly after his New World Symphony, the “American Quartet” was influenced by Dvořák’s idyllic sojourn in rural America. Although there is debate whether specific American musical references can be heard in the piece, the one confirmed musical reference is the song of the American songbird, the scarlet tanager. According to music historian Lucy Miller, Dvořák was annoyed by the bird’s “constant chattering,” and transcribed it in his notebook.

Parking at CWU lots is free after 4:30 p.m. and on weekends, except in specially marked spaces or in residence hall lots.

About the Kairos Quartet
The Kairos Quartet, established in 1993, has been the quartet-in-residence at Central Washington University since 1998. Violinists Carrie Rehkopf and Denise Dillenbeck, violist Timothy Betts, and cellist John Michel have extensive chamber music experience and have toured internationally.
