High School Choirs, CWU Singers Perform Works of Vijay Singh
- May 23, 2014
Guest choirs from Walla Walla High School and Union High School from Vancouver, Washington are joining CWU choirs for a free concert 7 p.m. Friday, May 30 in CWUâs McIntyre Music Building Concert Hall. The six-choir company is made up of eight conductors and 250 singers.
Singhâs compositions are performed the world over. He recently received his 13th American Society of Composers and Publishers (ASCAP) award and is rapidly gaining international attention. Singhâs âMASS with Orchestraâ had its world premiere at New York Cityâs Lincoln Center in 2011.
âVijay is a prolific composer,â says Dr. Gary Weidenaar, a CWU music associate professor and director of choral studies. âWith over 200 compositions for choir, he has a very wide range of subject, style, and difficulty, always finely crafted and some as challenging as anything a choir can tackle.â
Weidenaar adds the school is proud and pleased to present the high school choirsâsome of Washington stateâs finestâsinging Singh compositions. The CWU choirs will be singing West Coast premiers, such as Oft Have I Vowed; Adonai (in Hebrew); and Lordâs Prayer (influenced by Messianâs O Sacrum Convivium). The complete 29-piece repertoire can be found on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/events/230210560510826/.
