In honor of Women’s History Month, the Central Washington University Office of Undergraduate Studies is proud to host a film series highlighting the contributions, struggles, and experiences of women across the world.

The series kicks off Tuesday, March 5, with a showing of The Unlikely Story of the Lesbians of First Friday, a documentary on the resilience of a group of lesbians from the Bible Belt of southwestern Virginia in the 1980s. The screening will feature a meet-and-greet with the director of the film, Kathryn Beranich, plus a Q&A following the main event.

Beranich explains that her own experiences have informed her work as a filmmaker.

“I celebrate lesbians who came of age in the ’70s and ’80s,” she said. “We created families of choice, supported each other’s careers, and played together on the weekends. Most importantly, we laid the foundation for the acceptance that lesbians enjoy today.”

CWU Dean of Undergraduate Studies Yoshiko Takahashi said that “...bringing CWU faculty, staff, students, and community members together to enjoy a documentary about lesbians directed by a woman is an exciting way to celebrate Women’s History Month.”

The meet-and-greet will be held in the SURC Ballroom from 5-6:45 p.m., followed by the screening of the film in the SURC Theatre.

Additional CWU Women’s History Month Film Series highlights include:

  • A community screening of international short films exploring the lived experiences of women from every walk of life. Friday, March 8, at 6 p.m. at Gallery One in downtown Ellensburg.
  • The Cow Who Sung The Song Into The Future, a Chilean film discussing ecological themes and women as stewards of the earth. Thursday, March 14 at 5:30 p.m. in Samuelson 104.
  • Night Raiders, a post-apocalyptic fantasy film about a mother saving her daughter from a government facility. Thursday, March 28 at 5:30 p.m. in Samuelson 104.

All events in the series are free and open to the public.

The Women’s History Month Film Series is sponsored by the Office of the President, the Office of Undergraduate Studies, the Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, the Department of World Languages and Cultures, and the Museum of Culture and Environment.
