Staff from the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project’s (NWIRP) Granger office will lead the Central Washington University “Immigration: Know Your Rights Presentation” on Saturday, January 28. NWIRP is a statewide organization that promotes justice by defending and advancing the rights of immigrants through direct legal services, systemic advocacy, and community education.

The free presentation, from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in Student Union and Recreation Center 137, is designed to help community members answer questions or address concerns they have about their rights, such as what to do when approached by police or immigration officials. It will include a question-and-answer panel, and free—but limited—consultations will be offered by attorneys and authorized accredited representatives.

“Such educational and practical sessions are sorely needed given the potential change in policy and law with the new administration,” said Chuck Reasons, CWU law and justice professor.

The presentation is sponsored by the Law and Justice Department, Africana and Black Studies, Center for Leadership and Community Engagement, Center for Diversity and Social Justice, and Social Justice and Human Rights Dialogues, and Student Involvement.

The CWU presentation, which will be conducted in Spanish with English translation, is part of a series of such events being held throughout central Washington.

Mirta Laura Contreras, directing attorney at NWIRP’s Granger office, states that the “goal of these presentations is to provide information to the community and give them the opportunity to ask questions. We are pleased that CWU is hosting this event.”
