A massive accumulation of trash appears to be endless, as CWU Bachelor of Fine Arts candidate Sandra Rivera expresses in her senior exhibition, DESHACIENDO.

Rivera creates collages and expresses her concerns for the environmental issues, and her artwork invites you to take a closer look and see things as they are. Rivera understands that she cannot control everyone's actions, but she is able to create collages by reusing magazines that otherwise would end up in a landfill.

"I arrange unrelated images to create new meanings that shed light on environmental issues that appear endless," she explains. "Through the process of collage, I intend to challenge the viewer's perception and raise awareness about environmental issues that are destroying our planet and are often overlooked."

An opening reception for DESHACIENDO will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday, May 15, in Gallery 231 in Randall Hall. The exhibit will run through Friday, May 19. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Rivera is a native of Mattawa, Washington, where she often participated in events that involved cleaning up her community. These experiences helped inspire the work that appears in the Gallery 231 exhibition.
