'Comfort women' panel draws crowd

It was standing room only Tuesday night at a panel discussion on Imperial Japanese wartime sexual slavery and the euphemistically named "comfort women" program in the Student Union and Recreation Center Ballroom.

The event was organized in response the screening of the film The Scottsboro Girls, which implies the women were actually relatively willing paid camp followers and prostitutes at best and, at worst, that the entire story is a hoax. The film’s director, Yujiro Taniyama, spoke nearby to the panel discussion in the SURC Theatre, before showing the film.

Students, many reportedly of Chinese descent, held signs decrying sexual violence and historical revisionism outside of the SURC Theatre in protest.
