CWU Move-In Days grabs attention of area reporters

Each year, when students return to Central Washington University following a long summer away, the community comes together to welcome them — approximately 2,500 who live on campus — with events, resources, and over the last week, reporting.

CWU Move-In Days was featured on KIMA Action News and in the Ellensburg Daily Record last week, with a focus on the ways in which the occasion is supported by the entire Ellensburg community.

In an interview with KIMA, Executive Director for Housing and Residence Life Tricia Rabel pointed to the many ways in which entities like the Ellensburg Downtown Association, churches, and nonprofits assist with students’ transition to college life.

“There are welcome events that the community puts on; our students benefit from the community so much,” Rabel told KIMA. “And we hope that that is a unique partnership in both ways.”

The KIMA report also caught up with CWU parent Mark Gobron, who was helping his student move into Dugmore Hall. His experience with the process had left him feeling supported and excited about his student’s journey.

“Everything is very organized,” he told reporter Ty Therien. “Today it's very easy … the preparation, the mapping.”

Earlier in the week, the Daily Record followed up with Assistant Director of Housing Services Lindsey Myers, who expressed excitement at the oncoming tidal wave of student life.

“Those are our main days — with about 1,500 students moving in,” Myers told the Daily Record. “It’s the highlight of our year.”

In their reporting, the paper also checked in with returning student El Lockard about their switch to an on-campus apartment in Student Village.

“I really liked having my own kitchen,” Lockard said about why they chose to change locations. “And my own space.”
