Central Washington University coaching legend Dean Nicholson celebrated his 100th birthday on Sunday, June 28, surrounded by friends, family, and former Wildcats at his home in Walnut Creek, California.
According to an article in the Yakima Herald-Republic, Nicholson still gets around pretty well, visiting guests, remembering most by name and using a walker. He remains sharp — even witty at times.
“If I would have known I’d live this long, I would have taken better care of myself,” he joked. When asked if there is a word to describe how he feels, he responded, "grateful.”
Nicholson and wife Charlene moved to Walnut Creek in 1998 from Yakima, where he coached Yakima Valley College and the Yakima Sun Kings after leading the Wildcats to 609 wins over 26 seasons. He guided the program to 22 NAIA national tournament appearances, including an appearance in the national title game in 1970.
Nicholson also played in Ellensburg for his father, Leo, who coached Central's men's basketball team from 1930-64 and won 505 games before handing the program to his son. Nicholson Pavilion, which opened in 1959, is named for Leo, not Dean. He eventually had a campus road named after him, Dean Nicholson Boulevard, which runs along the north end of the Ellensburg campus.
The Hall of Fame coach built a career defined by consistency, excellence and enduring relationships. Though he is remembered by many for his on-court success, those who know Nicholson best often point to his ability to connect with people.
An article on WildcatSports.com noted that a number of his former players have made regular visits to Nicholson’s Walnut Creek home in recent years. The reunions have become a tradition decades after their playing days ended, a testament to the relationships he fostered during his coaching career.
Son Gary and his wife Lysa hosted a two-day party for Nicholson last weekend in Walnut Creek, welcoming 60 guests. Nicholson's other son Joel of Coral Gables, Florida, was also in attendance. Nicholson has three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
