Juried Student Art + Design Exhibition opens May 14 at Sarah Spurgeon Gallery

Beginning next week, the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery at Central Washington University will host the 2026 Juried Student Art + Design Exhibition.

The opening events will take place in Randall Hall, room 141 on Thursday, May 14, with a reception from 5-7 p.m. The award ceremony, where students are recognized for excellence in their artwork, will begin at 6 p.m.

This annual exhibition is a showcase for outstanding student artwork created during the past academic year. It is open to CWU students who have attended classes in the Department of Art + Design.

This year’s jurors, who select the artwork for the exhibit and assign several of the awards, are Leo Andraca and Carly Sheehan. They will host a jurors’ talk on Thursday, May 7, from 4-5 p.m. in Randall Hall, room 117.

Andraca, the graphic design juror, is a CWU alumnus (‘18) and works as a graphic designer for the Seattle Mariners. Sheehan, the studio art juror, is a visiting artist and full-time lecturer in painting, drawing, and printmaking at the University of Washington.

Student awards have been generously donated by the following individuals and organizations: the Student Union Advisory Board, Alumna Jane Orleman, President Jim Wohlpart and Sasha Wohlpart, Professor Emeritus Glen L. Bach, Professor Emerita Cynthia Krieble, Associate Professor Maya Chachava, Dennis and Teresa Francois, Interim Chair Bernadette Jungblut, the Estate of Professor Emerita Margaret Sahlstrand, Professor David Bieloh, Gallery One Visual Arts Center, PUNCH Projects, Shane L. Johnson Illustration, Senior Architect Joanne Hillemann, Associate Professor Justin Colt Beckman, Associate Dean Rachel H. Kirk, and the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery.

The Juried Student Art + Design Exhibition will remain on view through June 6. Sarah Spurgeon Gallery is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 1-5 p.m. The gallery is closed on Sundays and will be closed Memorial Day on Monday, May 25.
