Longtime supporters invest in future alumni connections

Alumni Doug (’68) and Sharon (’90) Andrews have long been champions of Central Washington University, giving their time, energy, and support to strengthen the Wildcat community.

This year, they deepened that commitment by designating $125,000 to the alumni association — an investment that will create new opportunities, experiences, and connections for Wildcats everywhere.

When asked why giving back to Central is so important, Doug said, “If it wasn’t for Central, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Central was such a huge part of my life, and it played a big role in my business and retirement.”

For him, CWU gave the opportunity to grow, to learn, and to discover what was possible.

“I probably wouldn't have gotten a college education if not for Central,” he reflects. “Central is, and has been, really an advocate for all students like myself. They were patient enough and helpful enough to allow students with some disabilities to learn there. They look after their students.”

That gratitude turned into a lifelong commitment to staying connected. He was among the first to help reestablish the CWU Alumni Association, recalling those early days as a small group of Wildcats gathered with “some stale donuts and stale coffee and talked about how to establish an alumni association.”

From those humble beginnings grew the thriving alumni community we know today. Years of service on the alumni board deepened his understanding of CWU’s mission and strengthened his resolve to support its future. Though he is unsure exactly how many years he served on the board, he has fond memories throughout his entire time there.

“Time flies when you're having fun! It was extremely interesting to be part of the board as long as I was and really get to understand Central and Central’s philosophy,” he says.

Now, through gifts to the Alumni Success Fund, Doug, Sharon, and fellow donors ensure that today’s students and alumni can continue to experience the same lifelong community that shaped their own lives.

Whether it’s alumni networking events like CWU Night at the Mariners, or programs that build professional pathways, these gifts create experiences that keep Wildcats connected long after their time in college.

The Andrews are a great reminder that giving back is not just about gratitude for the past, but about creating impact for the future.
