For the last 10 years, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) has hosted the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP), a year-long initiative aimed at helping higher education professionals develop their skills in preparation for administrative roles.

This year, Central Washington University Director of Concurrent Enrollment and Continuing Education Kyle Carrigan was selected as one of 37 members of the cohort from a pool of applicants spanning all 50 states.

Carrigan was selected, in part, due to a recommendation from CWU President Jim Wohlpart.

“I was fortunate to be provided a letter of recommendation from President Wohlpart and am thankful for his leadership and support,” Carrigan said. “The program is a great opportunity for me to learn more about leadership skills and tools, and to reflect on my own leadership, what I value, and my philosophy.”

This year’s ELP program kicked off with an intensive, in-person workshop June 24-26 in Washington, D.C. The event gave Carrigan the opportunity to connect and share ideas with fellow leaders from universities across the country and set the stage for a year of interactive online sessions and mentorship.

“The program has allowed me to build community with other people from regional comprehensive institutions,” he said. “The cohort will continue to work together throughout the next year, and I look forward to growing my leadership skills. A huge thank you to President Wohlpart for this recommendation and support.”

In addition to the educational and community-building aspects of the ELP, Carrigan will be called upon to lead an initiative or project at CWU, with guidance and support from the AASCU community. In a press release issued by AASCU, ELP Executive Sponsor Kristin G. Esterberg explained that this approach will help future leaders in education develop the comprehensive perspective that this kind of work requires.

“The AASCU Emerging Leaders Program is more than a leadership development opportunity; it’s an investment in the future of higher education,” she said. “We are proud to support our emerging leaders as they grow their skills, expand their networks, and prepare to shape the future of student success and institutional excellence.”
