Students enrolled in Professor Kate Im’s sculpture classes will work with visiting artist Jeanne K. Simmons to create a temporary sculpture in the central outdoor courtyard of Randall Hall.
Beginning, intermediate, and advanced sculpture students will gain hands-on experience designing and constructing the piece.
The public is invited to view the sculpture installation during the opening reception for Simmons’ solo exhibit in the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery this Thursday, January 16, from 5-7 p.m. in Randall Hall.
Simmons is an environmental artist based in Port Townsend whose artwork uses foraged and found materials to express her reverence for the natural world. Art and Design staff gathered branches, grasses, and other yard waste materials from the campus green waste piles for students to use in the workshop. Grounds Supervisor Blair McNeillie and Grounds and Nursery Specialist Bradley Pazian were instrumental in the cross-campus collaborative effort.
The exhibition Interweavings: Photography and Sculpture by Jeanne K. Simmons will remain on view in the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery through February 8. The gallery is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 1-5 p.m. The gallery will be closed Monday, January 20, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
