An Internship experience with an approved business or agency is a requirement of all students majoring in the ITAM programs. The internship experience occurs during summer quarter. The goal of the Internship Program is to provide students with the opportunity to apply classroom learning and gain first-hand experience. It is a structured and supervised professional experience for which the student earns academic credit.
FALL- First focus on completing a professional resume. Make sure to have this resume on hand when looking for an internship. Be prepared to customize it for each job application. Career Services can help you through workshops and individual counseling.
FALL-Take some time and look around at different companies and various job postings. Pick a business in your field so you can get real on-the-job experience. Ask friends and family about their companies. Read newspapers to find companies or industry needs.
FALL - Larger corporations like Microsoft and Boeing have an earlier deadline than smaller companies. Start early if you hope to intern in these areas because competition is fierce! Many of these corporations have an application deadline of Dec 31.
FALL- Email the ITAM Internship Coordinator to get enrolled in this course, which provides all the information and forms needed when considering an internship. Enrolling in this Canvas course does not obligate you to doing an internship this year.
FALL- Networking is a great way to find an internship. Get to know people in the field in which you hope to intern. Knowing people can sometimes get you an "in" somewhere, or merely by meeting them, they may offer you an internship in the future.
WINTER- Job Search - Start looking around your home town or wherever you are currently living. Use search engines like those listed on the CWU Career Services website.
May - Complete the first draft of the Internship Learning Agreement form. This form is found on the Blackboard site.
June - Learning Agreement is completed and submitted to the Internship Coordinator for final approval. Once department signatures are secured, you will get the employer's signature. Then the Learning Agreement with the Intern Release form is submitted.
Keep in mind that individual internship start dates will vary based on the company placement. Students find their own internships. Students find their own internship placements with help from past placement lists, career networks and CWU Career Services. This allows the student to customize this experience to the industry, company, locale, and job that best suits the student's needs and future career plans.
