Bilingual Education / Teaching English as a Second Language Minor


This minor prepares teacher candidates to teach in K-12 classrooms bilingually with culturally and linguistically diverse learners and/or English as a Second Language (ESL) learners in bilingual education programs.

Program Highlights

  • Bilingual individuals can utilize and build upon their linguistic and cross-cultural knowledge and skills to support bilingual learners and communities 
  • Eligible for Washington State K-12 add-on endorsements in both Bilingual Education and English Language Learner (ELL)
  • Learn to develop curriculum, materials and instruction for bilingual learners in dual language settings in Kindergarten to Grade 12
  • Focus on highly effective bilingual curricular, instructional and assessment practices that are culturally congruent
  • Knowledgeable and experienced faculty who focus on engagement, quality learning and positive learning environments
  • Integration of authentic materials and technology into every course 
  • Practical knowledge and instruction development though interactive experience for educators
  • Investigate second language acquisition theory and cultural patterns.

Program requirements

  • Students must demonstrate proficiency in a non-English language in order to meet the bilingual education minor requirements. Proficieny is demonstrated by passing the World Language Examination Assessment required by the State of Washington.
  • Full admission into the 2019 - 2020 Elementary Education Major or Professional Education Program is required before enrollment in any of the EDBL courses.
  • EDBL 492 requires that four required program courses be completed before enrollment

EDBL 430 - Sheltering Instruction for Linguistically Diverse Students 3 credits 

EDBL 433 - Educational Linguistics 3 credits 

EDBL 435 - Bilingual Education in the Content Areas 3 credits 

EDBL 438 - Teaching English as a Second Language 3 credits 

EDBL 439 - Assessment of Linguistically Diverse Students 3 credits 

 EDBL 440 - Development of Literacy with Linguistically Diverse Students 3 credits 

EDBL 492 – Practicum (Four EDBL courses must be completed before EDBL 492 admission) 3 credits

Total Credits 27 credits
