CEPS Dean’s Council Values and Guiding Principles


Values: Fundamental beliefs of CEPS Dean’s Council. Defines or builds the culture, that guides our actions (subjective).

Guiding Principles: Operationalizes values, are more specific in how they guide CEPS Dean’s Council through everything it does (objective).

The Dean's Council (DC) is comprised of the CEPS dean, associate deans, department chairs, and administrative staff. Through leadership and collaboration, the DC provides administrative support for the departments and their missions. The Dean's Council is a cohesive unit that works together closely to advance the college's goals.

Values and Guiding Principles


To support students at each stage of the student lifecycle, the CEPS Dean’s Council has adopted the following values and guiding principles.everything it does (objective).
  • Value 1: Total Student Success

    Guiding Principles:
    • Develop the student as a whole person
    • Implement effective advising practices and direct students to university systems that will benefit them holistically
    • Identify and implement student engagement activities throughout the student life cycle
    • Support career development during the academic

  • Value 2: Innovation

    Guiding Principles:
    • Explore and develop strategies by seeking diverse input and points of view
    • Commit time and invest in equipment and technology that will promote the success of all students, faculty, and staff
    • Collaborate and actively engage with the CWU community, both on and off campus, to improve access to state-of-the-art educational resources
    • Analyze internal processes and systems to advance strategies that will streamline innovation and remove artificial and unnecessary barriers
    • Improve psychological safety by granting autonomy and offering support in equal parts so we can provide a safe environment to fail

  • Value 3: Trust

    Guiding Principles:
    • Ensure that students — through their experiences at CWU and in CEPS — trust that they are prepared to fully engage in their professional and personal communities
    • Work toward the mutual benefit of all members of our CEPS community
    • Be true to our written and spoken words
    • Establish and follow processes that are timely, fair, and responsive for transparent decision-making that all CEPS members can count on
    • Cultivate a culture that acknowledges and values each person's unique contributions

  • Value 4: Equity and Belonging

    Guiding Principles:
    • Foster a culture of belonging within the college and across campus
    • Acknowledge the role of social identities in structural inequity and utilize targeted strategies to improve equity in systems, structures, and cultures
    • Value diversity and differences as assets and ensure that decision-making is inclusive and transparent
    • Intentionally reach out to underserved communities
    • Use data to reduce equity gaps across the college in all operational and academic areas

  • Value 5: Communication and Collaboration

    Guiding Principles:
    • Establish regular, reliable, and transparent channels of solution-based communication to all stakeholders
    • Collaborate with other departments, colleges, and professional partners in the pursuit of win-win outcomes
    • Assess and update communication and technical systems with more modern tools and methods
    • Expand student engagement by including their feedback about curriculum and information delivery methods
    • Establish clear procedures that establish mutual responsibility for student success
