The 2021 State of the University address was presented by CWU President Jim Wohlpart on October 21 at 11 a.m. This annual event gives the president an opportunity to speak about the university’s recent successes and the need to build upon those accomplishments. President Wohlpart also outlined his vision for the future and his desire to develop a clear strategic plan that will drive all university decisions for years to come.

Below are the four primary goals he presented during his address:

  1. Elevate shared governance and shared leadership — CWU faculty and staff must act in ways that are both collaborative and inclusive, and find meaningful ways to share information that is relevant and allows for participation in decision-making. We also need to be data-informed, not data-driven, remembering that behind every data point is a human being, an important program or project, with context and history that must be honored.
  2. Guide the institution with a clear and inspirational vision and mission, and a strong strategic plan — CWU’s strategic plan will provide a blueprint for how we achieve our vision, and it will be used to guide all decision-making, from budget allocations and reallocations to new program development and personnel. Most important, our central focus must always be on student engagement and student success.
  3. Embody an ethos of “deep care” — Every CWU employee will be inspired to care deeply for every individual, focusing on the people they are and the people they are becoming. We must recognize that we are all on a journey, while at the same time balance this care of individuals with care for the community as a whole.
  4. Remember the deep purpose of our work — Our primary objective at CWU is to help transform the lives of students, their families, and their communities. As faculty and staff, we touch the lives of students every day, providing them with a foundation for their life’s journey. Every student who comes to Central must be given the opportunity to know who they are, to find confidence in the person they are becoming, and to find a pathway forward that enables them to thrive.
