WA State Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML)

The Washington Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program provides paid leave to eligible Washington State employees. The program is administered by the Employment Security Department (ESD).

  • When may I apply for PFML?

PFML provides paid time off when a serious health condition prevents you from working, when you need time to care for a family member or a new child, or for certain military-related events.

Wait until after the date of your qualifying medical event (e.g., surgery or baby delivery date) to apply for PFML. If you apply early, your application may be denied. For all leaves (except birth or placement of a child), there is a waiting period up to 7 days before an employee is eligible for PFML benefits. Individuals may take family leave PFML within 12 months of a child’s birth or placement.

  • How do I know if I’m eligible for PFML?

Visit the ESD website to determine eligibility for PFML.

  • How do I apply for PFML?

CWU employees must apply for PFML through ESD. Filing for PFML with ESD is a separate process from taking medical leave from CWU.

    1. Complete the PFML Required Employer Notice.
    2. Read the required Statement of PFML Employee Rights (PDF).
    3. Create an online account with ESD. To complete your application, you will be required to provide dates of requested leave, date notice was provided to CWU, supporting medical documentation, scanned copy of identification, and banking information.
    4. Once approved, submit weekly claims to ESD for the paid benefit.

        Reminders:

    • Accrued leave submitted with CWU (e.g., vacation, sick, personal holiday), is considered a “supplemental benefit,” and will not affect your PFML benefit.
    • Ensure time and leave is entered correctly into MyCWU. Contact HR@cwu.edu for assistance.
  • How do FMLA and PFML differ?

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federal program offering unpaid job protection, while PFML, available for those working in Washington State, offers paid leave and a broader definition of “family.” If eligible for both, PFML and FMLA generally run concurrently.
