Knowing how to work with a sign language interpreter should lead to a successful outcome for everyone. Booking early, choosing the right interpreter for your setting, and sharing context well in advance will make the biggest difference in the quality of your session.
FAQs: Requesting Interpreters
The Disability Services Office has compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions from students about Sign Language Interpreting services at CWU:
Do I have to request sign language interpreters for my classes, or does disability services do that?
All CWU students are required to request interpreting services for their classes each quarter. Students should:
- Enroll during early registration each quarter
- Request all accommodations through the DS Portal
- Use the CWU Interpreter Request Form to request interpreters for all classes.
- Please remember to reply to all emails from Disability Services, and your assigned access specialist.
When should I make interpreter requests for my classes?
To avoid delays, students are encouraged to request interpreters as early as possible by completing CWU Interpreter Request Form. By requesting these services early, students have a better chance of having the right interpreter for their needs provided for each requested course.
How far in advance should I request an interpreter?
Please make the request as soon as you know the date and time of your class, appointment or event (at least 10 working days before services are required).
Qualified interpreters, especially those with technical, post-secondary expertise, can be booked weeks in advance. Early booking ensures you find the right interpreter for your needs and allows them to provide preparation materials if needed.
Use the CWU Sign Language Interpreter Request Form found at the link below:
Can I make a last-minute interpreter request?
Yes - However, last-minute requests are filled based on a first come first serve basis and are often limited due to lack of interpreter availability.
How do I request an interpreter for an event outside of class, like a club meeting, event or meeting with my professor?
Students should use the CWU Interpreter Request Form
Do I automatically have interpreting services provided for my exam or presentation during finals week?
No. You will need to submit an interpreter request for your scheduled final exam.
I am sick and unable to go to class. How do I let the interpreter coordinator know?
Students should email the Sign Language Interpreter Coordinator at ds@cwu.edu as soon as possible to reassign or cancel interpreting services for that class.
Can I request a specific interpreter for classes?
Yes! Email the Sign Language Interpreter Coordinator and request a specific interpreter. Every effort will be made to accommodate these requests, but we cannot guarantee your request will be fulfilled.
What happens if an interpreter isn’t a good fit?
If your interpreter’s style or skills aren’t meeting your needs, it is important to make changes quickly to maintain effective communication. Please fill out the CWU Sign Language Interpreter Evaluation Form immediately.
If I have a problem with my interpreter, what should I do?
First, email your concern to the Sign Language Interpreter Coordinator as ds@cwu.edu and fill out the CWU Sign Language Interpreter Evaluation Form. The Interpreter Coordinator will email you if more information is needed. You may also request a meeting with the Sign Language Interpreter Coordinator if you feel more comfortable sharing your experience in person or through a Zoom meeting. Please email the coordinator at ds@cwu.edu to request an appointment.
Do I need to provide anything to the interpreter before the session?
Yes. Share any materials, agendas, terminology lists, and participant names as early as possible with the Sign Language Interpreter Coordinator. This preparation allows the interpreter to become familiar with the subject matter and ensures more accurate communication. Email materials to ds@cwu.edu.
