Medical Services


CWU provides its students with primary medical care through an on-campus medical clinic, which is staffed with board-certified advanced nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, a medical assistant, and a registered medical technologist. The facility maintains its own laboratory and x-ray services and provides supplies and equipment that allow for a wide range of general medical practice services including:
  • Care of Acute and Chronic Illnesses

    As a primary care clinic, the nurse practitioners on staff are adept and experienced at evaluating and treating all acute and chronic illnesses.

  • X-Ray/Orthopedic Injuries

    • Evaluation and treatment of orthopedic injuries including splinting and casting

  • Sexual and Reproductive Health

    • Evaluation, testing, and treatment of STDs, including gonorrhea and chlamydia, HIV, syphilis, herpes simplex, HPV genital warts, and trichomonas.
    • Annual examination and Pap smear
    • Contraception counseling and prescriptions.
    • Insertion and removal of IUDs and Implants.
    • Depo-Provera injections
    • Emergency oral contraception
    • Pregnancy testing and counseling
    • Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) for HIV prevention

  • Laboratory

    • Lab tests are critical tools that help providers diagnose, manage and monitor medical conditions and illnesses. Our laboratory provides comprehensive clinical testing by a registered medical technologist.

  • Routine Physical Examinations

    • Sports participation
    • ROTC, DoDMERB
    • Pre-employment
    • International student
    • Study abroad
    • Paramedic program
    • Annual with pap smear
    • Dept. of Transportation (DOT) physical

  • Travel Medicine

    • Students who are planning to travel may schedule an appointment with a nurse to help with pre-travel preparation. The nurse will assess all the health and safety risks associated with that particular trip. The traveler will receive a customized plan of care which includes recommended vaccines, current health and safety bulletins, education on basic illness prevention and health promotion to help reduce risk while traveling.

  • Allergy Injections

    • Student Health Services administers allergy injections to students who have been tested by an allergy specialist. The student will need to bring the antigen and personalized protocol orders from the allergist. SHS does not do allergy testing.

  • Transgender Care

    We are committed to providing holistic care to meet the needs of all students. We work closely with the CWU Student Counseling Services to provide multi-disciplinary care that is centered on the complex needs of CWU's transgender students.

    Specific services provided through Student Health Services include:

    • Hormonal therapy consultation
    • Prescription of feminizing medications and testosterone therapy.
    • Hormonal injection education
    • Lab tests to monitor hormonal treatment
  • Immunizations

    Student may schedule an appointment with Student Health Services to receive the following vaccinations:

    • MMR
    • Tdap/Td
    • Influenza
    • Menactra (Meningitis ACWY)
    • Bexsero (Meningitis B)
    • Gardasil (HPV-9)
    • Hepatitis A
    • Hepatitis B (adult, 2-dose series)
  • Mental Health

    The nurse practitioners at Student Health Services are experienced in evaluating and treating a variety of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, sleep issues, ADD/ADHD*, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder and other mood disorders. We collaborate with Student Counseling Services to provide quality care for all students. If you have been receiving care from another provider and want to transfer your care and prescriptions to Student Health Services we can help you do that too.

    *For ADD/ADHD treatment we require records from your previous provider who was prescribing medication. If you have never been treated or diagnosed before we will refer you to the Student Counseling Services for evaluation and diagnosis prior to initiating stimulant medications.

  • Other Medical Treatments

    • Minor surgery including skin lesion and mole biopsies, laceration repairs and suturing, scar revisions, ingrown toenail removal, removal of foreign bodies, etc
    • Suture and staple removal
    • Wound care
    • Wart treatment
    • Impacted earwax treatment

Accreditation


CWU Student Health Services is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Care (AAAHC). At least every three years, SHS commits to a thorough, on-site survey by AAAHC surveyors to assess our ongoing effort to continuously improve our care and services. The AAAHC Certificate of Accreditation is a sign that a healthcare organization meets or exceeds nationally recognized Standards.
