Safety and Health Professionals Invited to Third-Annual Conference

More than 100 safety and health professionals from throughout Washington will gather at CWU on May 13 for a professional development conference. It is the third-annual Puget Sound American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) conference hosted by CWU’s Safety and Health Management Program.

The conference features keynote speakers Michelle Hansen and Daniel Evans. Sessions throughout the event will focus on everything from workplace accident investigations and hearing conservation, to mobile technology and workplace violence. And safety industry vendors will showcase their products throughout the day.

“This is a great opportunity for students to network with industry professionals and learn current industry happenings,” said Sathy Rajendran, director of CWU’s Safety and Health Management program.

Michelle Hansen of the HAMMER Federal Training Center will give the opening keynote. Her presentation, Always Ready: Mental and Emotional Preparedness, will draw on her experience being held hostage in 2001 by a teen gunman.

Daniel Evans of the Northwest Maritime Center will deliver the lunchtime keynote. Evans is race boss for Race to Alaska, a 750-mile engineless race from Washington to Alaska through the inside passage. He is in charge of every detail until the more than 100 participants either cross the finish line or drop out of the race.

The ASSE Puget Sound Chapter and CWU’s ASSE student section is organizing the conference, which is planned from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday in the Student Union and Recreation Center. Register online at pugetsoundasse.com or on site the day of the conference. Participants can earn continuing education credits for their attendance.

CWU alumni who attend the conference are invited to stick around for a dinner and meet and greet Friday evening in Hogue 106.
