CWU Provides Better Access to Student Support Programs

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Central Washington University’s Writing Center, Math Center, and Tutoring program have moved from Hertz Hall to the Academic and Research Commons (ARC), located on the first floor of the Brooks Library, to provide better access to these services for students.
"Students can now find comprehensive academic support services and with cutting-edge technological support in one location," said Associate Dean of Student Achievement, Jesse Nelson.
The move also creates space in Hertz Hall for other student support services. The Student Transitions and Academic Resources (STAR) program has expanded scope and services. STAR advisors and its reception office are all now located in the east wing of Hertz Hall.
CWU's nationally recognized College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) has moved to the first floor of Hertz and will continue to support 60 first-year students and CAMP alumni as they progress toward graduation.
The second floor of Hertz now houses three federally funded access and support programs: the TRiO Student Support Services (SSS), the McNair Scholars Program and GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs). Collectively, these programs support students from traditionally underserved populations and promote academic achievement from middle school to graduate school.
The newly formed Institute for Social Justice will also be located in Hertz Hall. The institute provides a unique multicultural and multidisciplinary environment that will permit the exploration of the multifaceted and multidimensional study of social justice. The institute serves two functions. First, it is a gathering place for students to study, meet, and celebrate their differences and similarities. Secondly, it will serve the academic needs of diverse students and faculty by providing a place for them to collaborate on community outreach, assessment, resources, and other intersecting issues.
