From the President: Heart of Higher Education Conference 2023
I am writing with a special opportunity to join a group of Central Washington University faculty, staff, and students to attend The Heart of Higher Education 2023: Finding Our Place in Shifting Landscapes. Building off of a conference led by Parker Palmer in San Francisco in 2007 and then revived in 2019, this conference will inspire conversation with our inner selves and with others, through poetry, music, and elders (including Parker himself), to reflect on questions of belonging to a place.
Ultimately, the Heart of Higher Education conference is about finding ways to “foster our ability to enhance the common good on our campuses—connecting with those purposes for which we originally sought this vibrant vocation, and becoming more present, whether in the classroom, meetings, the hallway, or in residential life.”
This virtual conference will be held June 14-16, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. to noon. In addition to these three morning sessions, CWU participants will gather in the afternoons from noon to 3:00 p.m. to deepen our understanding of self and others in relation to this place during this time. Participants must be available for the entirety of these sessions for all three days.
To be considered for CWU’s Heart of Higher Education cohort, we ask that you read “Inside Out Leadership” and submit a one-page letter of interest that responds to the following questions: “What is one adaptive challenge that draws you to leadership that elevates the vision and mission of Central Washington University? What about your values and vocational calling draw you to leadership on this adaptive challenge?” Please send your letter of interest to email@example.com by Monday, March 27, 2023; put “Heart of Higher Ed Application” in the subject heading.
To request further information about the conference, please contact the President’s Office at firstname.lastname@example.org.
