Economics is the study of decision making. Economists gather, manage, and analyze economic and business data to understand and predict trends so decision makers can make informed choices. Microeconomics focuses on developing theories about issues such as profit maximization, individual purchases, firm growth, etc. at the personal or company level; while macroeconomics focuses on decisions at a national level such as interest rates, money supply, unemployment, and more. Offering a low student-to-faculty ratio, each student receives individualized attention and mentoring from highly skilled faculty. Students in this program are actively encouraged to pursue faculty-guided individual studies and internships relevant to the field, with a particular focus on developing their quantitative skills. The Economics Club connects students with a group of peers and provides opportunities for motivated students to take up leadership roles within their field, attend professional conferences, and conduct industry-relevant research. CWU offers multiple specializations and minors in the economics area, including the newest minor in Business Analytics, to help students diversify their skills. Choose between the 3 specializations:

General Economics Specialization

Economics teaches valuable skills and problem-solving techniques that are highly valued in business and in government. Economists work in many sectors of the business including manufacturing, banking, insurance, and retailing, entertainment, technology and governmental agencies. General Economics- This is the traditional Economics degree, and is comprised of 84-85 credits including 25 credits in pre-admission courses, 25 credits in required Economics courses, and 30 credits in elective 300-400 level Economics courses.

Economic and Business Forecasting Specialization

This specialization is for students who are interested in careers involving “big data”  research and analysis.  The ability to analyze large data bases to learn about customers, develop new products and cut costs has become a key to success in many industries.  A recently published report by McKinsey & Co. predicts a shortage of hundreds of thousands of positions related to “big data” analysis. It is a 107-108 credit program that includes 43 credits in pre-admission courses, 55 credits in required courses, and 4-5 credits in a communication course.

Managerial Economics Specialization

This specialization is for students with an interest in either public or private sector employment, or to prepare for law school. It is a larger curriculum than the General Economics major, combining economics with accounting and finance courses that are useful in a business setting. It is a 97-98 credit program, including 43 credits in pre-admission courses, 30 credits in in required courses, 20 credits in upper-level Economics electives, and 4-5 credits for a Communications course.
