Special Education P-12 Major
The CWU Special Education P-12 Major Program is specifically designed to prepare teachers for meeting the diverse tasks required in teaching individuals with exceptionalities.
Special Education Major Program Highlights
- Find a full-time teaching position in any district in Washington, because Special Education is the area of greatest demand for educators in Washington State, the US and abroad
- Eligible for Special Education certificate/ initial license in Washington State
- Prepares educators to work in a pre-school through post special education learning environment, which includes high-incidence, low-incedence, self-contained, resource room, or inclusive classroom
- Practical knowledge and instruction development through interactive and hands-on learning and field experiences
- Thorough preparation for beginning educators to work well with behavior management, team collaboration, teaching to individual strengths and needs, and Individual Education Plans
- Knowledgeable and experienced faculty who focus on engagement, quality learning and positive learning environments
- Integration of authentic materials, field experiences and technology into every course
Special Education Major (P-12) Endorsement
This major satisfies the P-12 endorsement for special education. It also requires an accompanying endorsable content-area minor accepted by OSPI and the secondary education major courses.

- EDSE 411 Assessment of Students with Disabilities (4 credits)
- EDSE 422 Teaching Strategies, Curriculum, and Materials for Students with Disabilities (5 credits)
- EDSE 423 Instructional Practices and Strategies in Literacy and Math for Students with High-Incidence Disabilities (4 credits)
- EDSE 426 The Child with Language Exceptionalities (3 credits)
- EDSE 431 Program Management for Students with Disabilities (4 credits)
- EDSE 432 Strategies Working with Students with Low Incidence Disabilities (4 credits)
- EDSE 460 Collaboration with Parents, Paraprofessionals, and Community Agencies (4 credits)
- EDSE 495 Practicum (6-14 credits)
- EDSE 499 Capstone (2-5 credits)
- Total Credits 44-52
