Accessibility Studies

Undergraduate and Graduate ASP Programs

CWU offers three Accessibility Studies Programs: Graduate and Undergradaute Certificates may be taken by students engaged in a degree program (masters or bachelors) or non-matriculated students who are only taking ASP courses. All courses are online and very interactive. All courses are offered several times a year. 

Undergraduate Accessibility Studies Certificate - 16 credits 

This program is chosen by working professionals and community members with or without a bachelor's degree. Elective courses are optional.

• ASP 305 Accessibility and User Experience (4 cr) Prereq: Academic Writing (AW I). Offered every quarter.
• ASP 425 Universal Design (5 cr) Prereq: Academic Writing (AW I). Offered  Summer, Fall, Winter. 
• ASP 435 Accessible Information Design (5 cr) Prereq: AW II, and ASP 305 or ENG 301.  Offered Winter, Spring, Summer. 
• ASP 485 Accessibility Capstone (3 cr) Prereq: Enrollment in the other three courses first. Enrollment permission contingent on demonstration of research proficiency.  Offered Spring, Summer. 

Undergraduate Minor in Accessibility Studies - 21 credits

For undergraduates pursuing a bachelor's degree: Complete the certificate (above) plus program-approved electives to total at least 21 credits. These credits can be part of your major, too.  Your transcript will show both the Accessibility Studies Minor and the Accessibility Studies Certificate.

Select  additional program-approved credits to total at least 21 credits. Many courses may be proposed for approval. They must have a focus on diverse identities.

• ASP 184 First Year Experience (4 cr) Designed for students new to university writing, 

• ASP 410 Current Issues in Accessibility (1 cr) Seminar discussion of current issues, May be repeated.
• ASP 420 Universal Design for Learning (4 cr) Classroom strategies to increase accessibility for all students, requriing less accommodation.
• ASP 475 Research Methods for Accessibility  (2-7  variable cr) Individually arranged. May be repeated. 
• ASP 492 Practicum in Accessibility (2-12 variable cr) Individually arranged. May be repeated. Ideally related to the capstone project. Each credit represents 30 hours of field experience. This can be concurrent with other internship or employment placement. See Dr. Petersen to arrange this.
• ASP 496 Independent Study (2-7  variable cr) Individually arranged. May be repeated. 
• ASP 498 Media Portrayals of Disability (4 cr) Offered Spring, Summer, Fall. 

Many other courses have accessibility issues and can be approved as electives. Discuss your options with Dr. Petersen after you complete your application.  

Graduate Certificate in Accessibility Studies - 19 credits

If you already have a bachelor's degree, you may want the graduate level. The knowledge base is enriched with deeper and broader investigations of published literature and more academic writing is produced. Courses may become specializations within some master's degree programs. Courses require acceptance to CWU School of Graduate Studies and Research or program director permission.

• ASP 535 Accessible Information Design (5 cr.) Offered Winter, Spring, Summer. 
• ASP 585 Accessibility Capstone (3 cr.)  Enrollment permission contingent on demonstration of research proficiency.  Individually arranged. Select  additional program-approved credits to total at least 19 credits.  
• ASP 510 Current Issues in Accessibility (1 cr) Seminar discussion of current issues, May be repeated.
• ASP 520 Universal Design for Learning (4 cr) Classroom strategies to increase accessibility for all students, requriing less accommodation.  
• ASP 575 Research Methods for Accessibility  (2-7  variable cr) Individually arranged. May be repeated.
•  ASP 592 Practicum in Accessibility (2-12 variable cr) Individually arranged. May be repeated. Ideally related to the capstone project. Each credit represents 30 hours of field experience. This can be concurrent with other internship or employment placement. See Dr. Petersen to arrange this.
