Before You Start Research
Getting Started
If your project uses vertebrate animals or human subjects, you must request approval from the Human Subjects Review Council (HSRC) and/or the Institutional Animal Care of Use Committee (IACUC).
HSRC
The Human Subjects Review Council, CWU’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) committee, safeguards the rights and welfare of human subjects by evaluating the risks and benefits of project research. You are required to receive approval from the HSRC before proceeding with any research involving human subjects. Please check what all this includes and excludes and be sure to follow appropriate guidelines before conducting research.

IACUC
The Institutional Animal Care of Use Committee must approve any use of live vertebrate animals in research and teaching at Central Washington University. The IACUC has the broader goals of (1) reducing the number of animals used and minimizing any discomfort they may experience, (2) helping researchers seek alternatives to animal-based models, and (3) protecting the health and safety of those involved in research with animals. Please confirm if you need to request IACUC approval and follow appropriate guidelines before conducting research.
