Explore Philosophy & Comparative Religion at CWU

Department of Philosophy and Comparative Religion at Central Washington University offers a  supportive community for students who are passionate about exploring life’s deepest questions. Through student organizations, scholarships, honor societies, and research opportunities, we provide avenues for intellectual growth, meaningful dialogue, and academic recognition.

Join the Philosophy & Comparative Religion Club for thought-provoking discussions, special events, and panels on philosophical and religious topics. Outstanding students can pursue academic distinction through Phi Sigma Tau, the international philosophy honor society, or Theta Alpha Kappa, the national honor society for religious studies. Scholarships such as the Philosophy & Religious Studies Founding Faculty Scholarship and the Chester Z. Keller Scholarship support students who demonstrate excellence in their studies and contributions to the department.

Each year, we celebrate student research at the Senior Research Colloquium, where seniors present their thesis projects to faculty and peers. Whether you're looking to engage in rich discussions, earn academic honors, or receive financial support for your studies, our department offers many ways to get involved.

Department of Philosophy and Comparative Religion

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies offers a major in Philosophy and a major in Religious Studies.  A large plan (60 credits) and a small plan (50 credits) are available for both the philosophy major and religious studies major.  Specific requirements for these plans can be found at the Religious Studies Major and in the Online Catalog.

Please direct any questions regarding our programs to the department chair, Dr. Matthew Altman (matthew.altman@cwu.edu), or contact philo@cwu.edu.
