About the Music Fundamentals Course

This is a requirement for all incoming Freshman who do not score 80% or better on the Theory Fundamentals Placement Exam.

This is an on-line course consisting of 15 Units of multiple questions each that can be taken from home over a period of approximately 6-8 weeks. It must be completed by the Monday of the first week of classes.
If you are only deficient in one of the two areas Aural skills or Written theory, Dr. Boldt-Neurohr will let you know that you only need to do one of the two Fundamental courses. IF you need to both Dr. Boldt-Neurohr will indicate this to you as well.
- The Music Fundamentals Course cost is $25.00 each.
- Auralia Cloud if just Aural - $25
- Musition Cloud Student 6 months if just Written - $25
- If you need to take both it is $42 for the 6 months bundle
- Since each CWU credit costs more than this, it is well worth the cost as it is much cheaper than taking a 3-credit course at CWU.
CWU will have access to the results of your course. If the student scores a "B", or better, in the course, they will be enrolled in their selected MUS 144 section.
If you do not achieve a passing score, you must register and re-take the Course until you pass.

Scoring a B or better will automatically enroll you in MUS 144.

The exam has 45 questions. The exam tests the following:

Note writing, Reading pitches in bass and treble clefs
Scale writing treble and bass clefs major and minor keys up to 4 #'s and b's
Key Signature writing treble and bass clefs in major and minor keys up to 4 #'s and b's
Interval and chord writing - major and minor
Reading/understanding durational note and rest values (quarter-note or rest, eighth-note or rest, etc.)
Time signatures, basics and recognition both simple and compound
Meter bar lines
Aural pitch comparison recognition (which pitch is higher or lower than another)
Contour
rhythmic and melodic comparison
Pitch dictation
Aural interval recognition
Aural chord (triad) quality recognition
