Community College Transfers
The Nutrition Science Program in the Department of Health Sciences offers: The Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Science. Within the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Science are two specializations. The Nutrition Science Specialization provides a broad area of expertise and prepares students for a wide variety of careers in the food and nutrition industries. The Nutrition Science specialization is also designed to allow students to complete a minor in a field that relates to professional career advancement. The Dietetics Specialization, is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) as a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) and prepares students to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RN/RDN).
For community college students planning on transferring into one of our programs in Nutrition Science, it is strongly recommended that you take the following courses that are commonly available (CWU course listed):
- NUTR 101 – Intro to Human Nutrition
- CHEM 111, 111LAB – Introduction to Chemistry and Laboratory
- CHEM 112, 112LAB – Introduction to Organic Chemistry and Laboratory
- (CHEM 111 and 112 may be replaced with CHEM 181, 182, 183 and CHEM 361, 362 plus accompanying labs, respectively)
- CHEM 113, 113 LAB - Intro to Biochemistry and Laboratory
In addition, the following classes are often available at community colleges. Prospective transfers should consider taking the equivalent of the following CWU courses:
- BIOL 201 – Human Physiology (for Nutrition Science specialization)
- BIOL 355 and 356 - Human Anatomy & Physiology (for Dietetic specialization)
- BIOL 220 – Introduction to Cell Biology (for Dietetic specialization)
- BIOL 322 – Introduction to Microbiology(for Dietetic specialization)
- An Intro to Statistics Course
- PSY 101 – General Psychology (for Dietetic specialization)
It is also highly advisable to complete the AA degree at the community college since this will automatically meet all of CWU's General Education requirements.
