During most of 2017 I was doing a lot of independent research pertaining to drone imagery. I spoke with several farmers and Ag companies around Yakima and made orthomosaics of their orchards with my drone. This was mostly just to help make the local Ag community more aware of the booming agriculture-drone industry. I’ve recently been contemplating grad school and would like to study this topic more if I do decide to go. In November 2017 I moved to Meridian Idaho for a job with the City’s Urban Planning/Community Development Department as an Addressing Technician. Meridian and the Boise metro area is the fastest growing area in the country and I get to assign addresses and help name streets for all the new subdivisions that are coming in. It’s interesting work for sure and I know my GIS degree helped me get the job.

Allison Shinn was born and raised in the greater Seattle area and she grew up hiking, biking, skiing and other outdoor activities gaining a love for the outdoors and the beauty of nature. After receiving her high school diploma, she then moved to Ellensburg, WA to pursue a degree in Geography. She graduated from Central Washington University in June of 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Geography, Environmental Studies Minor and a Geographic Information System (GIS) Certificate from Central Washington University. Allison is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Urban and Environmental Planning (MUEP) and a Certificate in Transportation Planning. Her specific focus is on Transportation Planning looking at creating better public transportation as well as creating walkable and bike friendly infrastructure to create more sustainable and lively communities. Before beginning her studies at Arizona State University Allison gained experience in the transportation planning field working for CH2MHILL in Honolulu, HI working on the Honolulu Rail Project and other projects. For Honolulu Rail Project she worked on Geographic Information System (GIS) projects and helped to create 404/401 permits as well as attending meetings with local agencies and other consultants. Through this experience she gained a passion for transportation projects, specifically rail projects, and wished to continue her education studying urban planning. Allison wishes to pursue a career in transportation planning in either the public or private sector after graduating from her master’s program.

I grew up in Ellensburg staring at the mountains and dreaming of one day climbing them. I learned to climb at Frenchman’s Coulee about ten years ago. I have returned to Central to finish my Geography degree after a four year break, which I spent working seasonally, traveling and climbing. My travels have taken me all over the southwestern US and as far as Argentina.

In 2007 I transferred to the Air Force Reserve and moved to Youngstown, Ohio, where I am presently assigned. I now fly as a Navigator on C-130 transports and serve a flight commander and tactical officer. I’ve been selected to be promoted to the rank of Major in June of 2014.

I’m currently a graduate student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, World-Wide campus, working toward a Masters in Aeronautical Science. My academic specialization is in Human Factors in aviation, and I expect to complete my degree in the fall of 2014.

When I’m not flying for the Air Force, I’m a proactive advocate for space exploration. I’m a member of the National Space Society, the Planetary Society, and Astronauts4Hire- the first non-profit commercial astronautics company. My latest project has been serving as the Mission Commander of the 2nd Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS) Mars analog program on behalf of NASA’s Human Research Program (HRP) on Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii.

I am able to utilize what I learned from Central in an aviation sense and also through the use of remote sensing equipment. Being able to translate what I see with the equipment I'm using to people on ground level helps make me very effective at what I do.

I find that some skills in mapping, aerial photo interpretation, and basic earth sun relations are useful in working as a forestry technician in Fire And Aviation Managment for the U.S. Forest Service. The greatest aid my education has given me in my career with the Forest Service would have to relate to technical writing skills developed in lab reports in the Geography and Geology labs.

I currently work for a small group that is part of the United States Department of Transportation that works on federally owned roads and bridges throughout Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming. Constructing projects to provide or rebuild access to National Parks, Forest Lands, Wildlife Refuges, Military, as well as Native American lands. I find myself using my Geography and Land Studies degree almost every day in looking at our building techniques and the topography as well as the process affecting the finished product and whether it will last for another 30 years plus
