Does CWU offer assistantships?

We offer assistantship opportunities within the Athletics Department and the Sport and Athletic Management Studies Department. These positions are limited and competitive. For opportunities within CWU Athletics, we recommend making direct contact rather than emailing. As for the Sport and Athletic Management Department, graduate assistant positions typically involve teaching activity classes as part of our Activities Program.

  • Athletic Directors: As an Athletic Director, you are responsible for overseeing and managing the athletic programs of a school, college, or university. They handle various responsibilities like budget management, staff supervision, scheduling, facility maintenance, and promoting the athletic department's success.
  • Coaches and Scouts: The employment of coaches and scouts is expected to grow by 12% from 2019 to 2029, according to the BLS. This growth may be influenced by factors such as increased participation in sports programs and the demand for skilled coaches.

Alumni Doing Bigger, Better Things

2022 Graduate, Emily Meyring, received her graduate degree in Sports and Athletic Administration. She is now the Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach at Azusa Pacific University.

Christian Bond, a 2020 graduate, earned a master’s degree in Sports and Athletic Administration. He is now the Assistant Athletics Director at Seattle Pacific University.

New Facilities, New Possibilities

CWU’s Department of Sport and Movement Studies is housed in the new $60 million Health Sciences Building, which allows students to study in a state-of-the-art facility with innovative technology.

  • Admission Requirements

    To be considered for enrollment in the Sport and Athletic Administration Master’s Program, applicants must meet the general requirements for admission to the School of Graduate Studies and Research. In addition, applicants must submit the following items:

    • Official transcripts from all institutions of higher learning
    • Three letters of reference from supervising administrators
    • A letter describing the perceived value of the program and career goals

  • Program Information

    Cooperating Experience:

    • Each student will complete a one-quarter “cooperating experience” (internship) with a practicing professional in sports or athletic administration.
    • The experience can take place at a variety of sport or athletic-related programs, i.e., high school and intercollegiate athletic administration, coaching, state or national athletic-governing associations or professional associations, private or public recreational facilities or departments, college recreation, or professional sports organizations.
    • The internship will not only allow you hands-on experiences with a professional, but it also creates opportunities to network for future jobs.
