About the Safety and Health Management, MS

The Master of Science in Safety and Health Management degree program is a two-year journey where you'll gain an intimate understanding of operational aspects of environmental health and safety (EHS) in the workplace. This includes the critical areas of risk assessment and management, loss prevention, and EHS program audits and administration. Our goal is to ensure that you, as an EHS professional, have the necessary tools and skills to advise management effectively about EHS issues in the workplace. Admissions Information

The Master of Science in Safety and Health Management (MS-SHM) degree will use a cohort format, where all admitted students begin their program during the fall quarter of every other year, participate in all required courses together, and complete the degree as a group. To be considered for admission to the MS-SHM degree program, prospective students must meet all the application requirements of the School of Graduate Studies and Research (SGSR) requirements and additional SHM program-specific requirements by the published Fall quarter SGSR application deadline.

Please note GRE or GMAT standardized tests are not required for admission into the MS-SHM program.

Careers and Opportunities

The focus of this degree on safety, health management, and leadership equips you with the knowledge and skills necessary to take on roles of increasing responsibility and impact.

  • Safety Manager: As a Safety Manager, you'd be responsible for creating and implementing safety policies in the workplace. Your job would be to ensure that the company complies with safety laws and regulations and to create a safe working environment for all employees.
  • Environmental Health and Safety Director: In this leadership role, you would oversee all aspects of an organization's environmental health and safety programs. This includes ensuring the company meets regulatory requirements, managing risk, and promoting a health and safety culture throughout the organization.
  • Occupational Health Specialist: In this role, you would analyze various work environments and design programs to prevent disease and injury to workers. This includes developing health programs, ensuring compliance with health standards, and educating employees about health risks.
  • Policy Maker or Regulatory Officer: With a Master's in Safety and Health Management, you could also work on a governmental level, developing and enforcing regulations to protect workers and the environment.
